Japanese Iris Dinner Plate™ Harlequinesque 2 Gallon
Iris ensata
This beautiful Japanese Water Iris develops large, flattened, beardless, white flowers that are splashed with blue, violet and fuchsia highlighted by bright yellow throats in spring. Its foliage is medium green, tall and upright, sword-like, producing interesting grass-like clumps that remain vertical all growing season. Japanese Iris make a wonderful cut flower, thriving in perennial borders, rain gardens, near ponds or containers, and possess good deer resistance. Combine with perennial Lobelia and Hibiscus, Joe Pye Weed, and swamp milkweed. Plant in well-drained, average to moist soil amended with compost or planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer. Cut spent flower stems as low as possible. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in late summer to early fall every three years. Appreciates wet to moist soil in spring and summer, but requires drainage fall and winter.
