This tough, bloody cranesbill will amaze a gardener with its vivid violet-red, five petaled blooms and deep green, lobed foliage that turns rich shades of scarlet-purple in the fall. Long lived and well-behaved, mounding habit with a tendency to rebloom makes 'Max Frei' a companion to Oenothera, Iris, Phlox and bell flowers. Plant in a moist but well-drained, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like compost and planting mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use slow release fertilizer in spring or at planting; reapply midsummer. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
