Astilbe chinensis
This variety produces dark purple-red flowers in thick panicles late spring to early summer atop branching steams. The dense, upright form works great in a dappled shade border, a woodland garden, and also as groundcover. Chinese Astilbe varieties tolerate drought better than most other Astilbes, though they still do best in uniformly moist soil. A great choice for any gardener wanting to achieve color and texture in shady areas where other flowers won't thrive. Pairs well with hydrangea macrophylla, rhododendron, hosta, and coral bells.
