Astilbe 'Pumila' 2 gallon

Astilbe 'Pumila' 2 gallon

Astilbe chinensis

This Chinese Astilbe, aka false spirea, is a dwarf variety producing lavender-pink flowers on thick, spikey panicles in early to midsummer atop branching stems and hairy, sharply toothed, fern-like foliage. Its dense, mounded form works great in a dappled shade border, in rain gardens, a woodland garden, and also as a groundcover. Chinese Astilbe varieties are typically later blooming and tolerate sun and drought better than most, though they still do best in uniformly moist soil. A great choice for any gardener wanting to achieve color and texture in shady areas where other flowers won't thrive. Good cut or dried flower with deer and rabbit resistance too. Pairs well with Hydrangea, Rhododendron, Hosta, and coral bells. Plant in well-drained and moist, nutrient-rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week, for the first year. Fertilize in spring and again in summer with a slow release fertilizer following the package instructions. Mulch 1-2 inches to suppress weeds. Divide in spring every 3-4 years.
