Goldfish Plant 6" Hanging Basket

Goldfish Plant 6" Hanging Basket

Columnea gloriosa
Named for the masses of fish-shaped, red-orange flowers it produces, this tropical houseplant is actually a cousin to the African Violet. The flowers appear each spring and summer and present as leaping goldfish. They make for great cascading plants in a hanging basket or in a container placed on a bright windowsill. Long-lived, they can thrive for a full decade, especially when re-potted, on occasion when necessary. Plant in a light, well-draining potting soil, and place in bright, yet indirect, light. Eastern-facing windows are great. During the active spring and summer growing months, water generously to keep the soil coninuously and evenly moist. During the winter months, cut back on water so that soil is permitted to become slightly dryer, though not completely dry, between waterings. These plants do well in adverage household temperatures of 65 to 75 degrees Fahrenheig. Misting daily with water is nice for supplying mild to moderate humidity, if the home tends to be particularly dry. Feed weekly during the active growing season (April-September) with a weakened all-purpose indoor plant fertilizer (1/4 strength) or use slow-release fertilizer pellets. Re-pot only every 2-3 years, as this plant does prefer to live in a somewhat root-bound manner.
