Oxalis 'Iron Cross' 4"

Oxalis 'Iron Cross' 4"

Oxalis spp.

Oxalis is a festive plant family for St. Patrick's Day, but it can also be enjoyed year-round as a charming and easy houseplant. 'Iron Cross' is a variety that produces a lush mound of green leaves comprised of four, heart-shaped leaflets. At the center of each leaflet is a dark puple blotch reminiscent of a cross. These decorative shamrocks also produce small, five-petal flowers in colors of white, blush pink or lavender. Growing from a bulb (rhizome), they make fun houseplants for cool, bright areas and pair well with Cyclamen, Primrose, and other forced bulbs. Place this plant in a cool northern or eastern window where it can receive bright, indirect light, but not heat. When watering, keep the plant's soil on the dry side. It will wilt slightly when it's ready, but will perk back up after the soil is moistened. Bottom watering is recommended. Fertilize with Osmocote. Deadhead spent flowers by gently pulling the stalk from the bulb, instead of cutting. Foliage can be cut back at any time to keep a tidy habit.
