Olea europaea Growing potted olive trees indoors has become popular not only for their aesthetic quality but also because they are easy to care for. The plant's ability to produce attractive evergreen foliage, sweetly-scented white blooms and fruit despite a shortened growing season, its resiliency and adaptability to thrive in container gardens, and its tolerance of heat, dry air, and drought make for a fascinating edible tropical and seasonal houseplant. Olive trees are not cold-hardy in Northeast Ohio, so they'll need to be transitioned indoors and treated as a houseplant during the winter. For best care, try to mimic a Mediterranean climate; olives enjoy heat and well-drained, drier soil conditions. An ideal temperature range for them to flourish is 60-85? F. Water thoroughly and deeply when the soil feels dry 1-2" deep. Olives prefer a balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied April to September as directed. Olives are self-fertile and begin to produce fruit around 5-6 years old. Plant with other drought tolerant plants like Echeveria and Haworthia.
