Neanthe Bella Parlor Palm 6 Inch

Neanthe Bella Parlor Palm 6 Inch

Chamaedorea elegans

Palms are a huge plant family consisting of tropical trees or shrubs with large, compound, evergreen fronds that are arranged at the top of an unbranched stem. They make excellent "thrillers" in annual container gardens, can provide shade on a sunny porch or patio over the summer, and make terrific houseplants year-round. This petite, tropical-rainforest, parlor palm is one of the best species for shady sites where a soft, light to medium green, upright arching accent is needed. It is commonly grown indoors for its air-purifying qualities. Additional benefits to growing Neanthe Bella as a houseplant include its tolerance of low-light conditions and its designation as pet-safe plant per the ASPCA. It's a slow-growing plant, reaching 2-7 feet tall by 2-3 feet wide over several years while producing slender, bamboo-like stems. If enjoying a potted Neanthe Bella outdoors, in the shade for the summer, know that it pairs beautifully with a few simple annuals like Begonias or Impatiens planted at its base. Grow in average household temperatures, 60-80 degrees F. In northeast Ohio, tropical plants can be grown indoors year-round or can be enjoyed outdoors in the summer and returned inside during the winter. Prefers well-drained soil, a 1:1 mix of potting and cactus soils works nicely. Water thoroughly, keeping soil evenly moist to slightly dry between water applications. Supply extra humidity by setting the plant on a shallow tray of moistened pebbles. Fertilize with a slow-release plant food in spring and midsummer, or apply a palm plant food following label instructions. Palms like to be rootbound; only repot when clearly outgrown its container.
