Fishtail Palm 17 Inch

Fishtail Palm 17 Inch

Caryota spp.

Fishtail palms are one of the most distinctive members of the palm family due to their large, deep green, pinnate fronds with wedge shaped leaflets and wavy edges that resemble fishtails. Its also popular to grow indoors and out due to its low maintenance and longevity. They are cold sensitive, so avoid exposure below 50 degrees F. Palms are commonly used as floor plants in large living spaces, make excellent "thrillers" in an annual container garden, and can provide shade on a sunny porch or patio over the summer. Combine with other shade-loving tropicals and annuals like Bromeliads, crotons and Begonias planted at its base. Grow in average household temperatures, 60-80 degrees F. In northeast Ohio, tropical plants can be grown indoors year-round or can be enjoyed outdoors in the summer and returned inside during the winter. Prefers well-drained soil, a 1:1 mix of potting and cactus soil works nicely. Water thoroughly, keeping soil evenly moist to slightly dry between water applications. Supply extra humidity by setting the plant on a shallow tray of moistened pebbles. Fertilize with a slow-release plant food in spring and midsummer, or apply a palm plant food following label instructions. Palms like to be rootbound; only repot when clearly outgrown its container. Prune off lower fronds as they dieback.
