This tough, cold-hardy, easy to grow, upright, deciduous shrub features small to medium, glossy green foliage that develops to a shade of burgundy in fall. It produces 2-inch clusters of creamy-white, unusual smelling flowers in June to July, followed by unremarkable black fruits. This fast growing, fine textured plant takes pruning and shearing well. A fast growing choice for a hedge or foundation planting. Can be used as a topiary, too. Plant in well-drained to moist, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead branches or shear any time. When necessary, prune heavily in late winter to rejuvenate or after flowering. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2-inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Susceptible to Powdery Mildew; treat with Copper Fungicide as needed.
