Cotoneaster salicifolius 'Scarlet Leader' is an easy to grow, slightly mounding, mostly prostrate, deciduous shrub with dense, sprawling branches covered in narrow, oval, shiny green leaves that turn shades of purple, red and bronze. Profuse white spring flowers are followed by bright red berries that persist into winter. This shrub can be used as a salt-tolerant groundcover, attract pollinators or serve as erosion control. Plant with Roses, Junipers and Creeping Phlox. It prefers average to moist, well-drained soils. Water well after planting; maintain 1? of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; remove damaged or undesirable branches late winter/early spring. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a multipurpose slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2? to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
