European Filbert is a suckering shrub that forms dense thickets in average well-drained soil. Fall leaf color The bark is corky and on mature trunks may flake to reveal orange under layers. Trees are either male or female, with male trees producing showy catkins, and the females (if wind pollinated) produce spike fruits containing edible (when roasted) nuts in clusters. 'Contorta', also called corkscrew filbert or Harry Lauder's Walking Stick, has extremely twisted stems and wrinkly leaves. These plants are grafted, so root suckers will not be contorted and must be removed.
