This cultivated variety of an Ohio native plant produces fragrant, showy white flowers in spring followed by small, blueberry sized, glossy, dark purple fruits that song birds enjoy. Green oval foliage turns to vibrant orange, red and purple in autumn. Use this plant in hard to grow places, soggy clay soils, woodland backdrops, rain gardens, and for erosion control. A Proven Winners® variety. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water once a week the first year. Prune as needed in late winter or after flowering in spring. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Plant with other natives like Cardinal Flower Lobelia, Milkweed and Switch Grasses.
