Cherry Laurel is a broadleafed evergreen that grows in moist, rich, well-drained soil - good drainage is critical. Hardy zones 6-8. Prefers sun in cooler areas of the range. May not be reliably winter hardy in Northeast Ohio. Strongly fragrant white cup-shaped flowers appear upright racemes in April and May, followed by inconspicuous black fruits that are too bitter for human consumption but are prized by birds. Often used as a hedge. Skip Cherry Laurel, 'Schipkaensis' has smaller leaves than hte speies and is distinguished by its upright and wide-spreading form.
