Alpine currant or Mountain Currant is a compact shrub that does best in well-drained soil. Bright green leaves turn yellow in fall. Female plants, in the presence of a male, will produce a small inedible scarlet fruit. Most commercially sold plants are males. Grown for ornamental value. Do not plant near white pines since it is an alternate host of potentially fatal white pine blister rust.
