Andromeda polifolia 'Blue Ice' is a unique, extremely cold tolerant, low growing, spring blooming, evergreen shrub with bright, silvery-blue, rosemary-like foliage. Its pastel pink, urn shaped flowers appear in nodding clusters midspring to early summer. This is a slow grower with a mounding, clumping habit. A relative of heath and heather, this plant prefers rich but well-drained, amended, acidic soil but can tolerate wet soils. Water well after planting; maintain 1? of water once a week the first year. If needed, prune in spring immediately after flowering. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer and fall with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2? to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
