American Elderberry is a large, upright, open, suckering plant with pinnate green leaves. White flowers appear in June followed by fruits that ripen purple-black and are relished by birds. Fruit is seedy but edible when cooked, making excellent jellies or pie. 'Johns' is a cultivated variety with larger flowers, and larger berries on more vigorous plants.
