Syringa pekinensis 'Great Wall' is an improved variety of a Peking Lilac Tree that develops an upright, oval canopy with upswept branching, perfect for planting as a street tree or landscape specimen. It produces showy, fragrant, creamy white flower clusters around the middle of June, and its deep green, glossy foliage turns golden shades in the fall, while its shiny, bronze, exfoliating bark provides interest year-round. Lilacs make excellent sunny border plants for cutting, fragrance, pollinator attraction and specimens. Combine with spring blooming bulbs, peonies, dwarf lilacs and spireas. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in late winter or after flowering as needed. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
