Black gum, tupelo, or sour gum trees prefer moist water and will tolerate standing water. It tolerates some drought. Inconspicuous white flowers are prized by bees and other pollinators, and small black fruit may appear in the fall, attracting birds. Fall color is impressive scarlet. 'Tupelo Tower' is a columnar variety with all the height but about half the width of the species, with yellow to red fall color.
