Lupinus polyphyllus An award winning, heirloom variety of George Russell's cottage garden classic that produces a fantastic display of tall, showy flower spikes in late spring to early summer. 'The Governor' Lupine is an extraordinary variety with bicolor marine blue and white, pea-like blooms that emerge from light green to gray-green, compound palmate foliage to make a huge impact in the garden or containers, and they serve as excellent cut flowers. Combines well with Creeping Phlox, Columbine, and Russian Sage. Plant in cool, well-drained, slightly acidic, deeply amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Deadhead flowers to induce branching and additional buds and blooms. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with an acidic fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
