A very durable, low maintenance, bushy perennial plant that is a great choice for sunny, pollinator gardens. Very tough and hardy, it will thrive in many challenging locations. Its cup shaped, fiery red flowers are long lasting and complement the cool colors of Nepeta and Artemisia. Use in mixed perennial borders or as a colorful foundation plant. It's salt tolerant and an Ohio cultivated native. Plant in average to moist, well-drained soils. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune in late winter removing one-third of the branches to the ground or cut back hard every 2-3 years to rejuvenate. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a multipurpose slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect.
