Cascading, umbrella-like growth with very lacy leaves, and deep purple color that holds well in heat make this an outstanding dwarf maple. A great choice as an accent, container plant, or in foundation plantings. Grows slowly. Japanese maples make excellent understory or part shade landscape specimen, provide year round interest, and can be planted near Black Walnut trees. They are rabbit resistant, and prefer moist, rich, slightly acidic but well-drained soil. Combine with Azaleas, Hosta, and ferns. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1? of water once a week the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead branches or trunk suckers any time. Feed early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2? to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
