Small, creamy-white flower panicles appear in late spring to summer on sturdy, upright stems, and turn medium pink as they mature attracting pollinators. Its interesting exfoliating bark is a winter bonus. Superb as a shady foundation plant or in a cut flower border with ferns and Astilbe. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Blooms on old wood, prune if needed after flowering or early spring to uppermost growth. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a slow-release fertilizer, according to package directions. Mulch 2 inches to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Winter protection is recommended.
