Syringa patula This lilac is a Korean variety producing a compact, oval to rounded, upright habit adorned with clusters of deep violet buds opening into fragrant, pale, lavender-pink blooms after all the other lilacs are finished. Its 2 to 5 inch, leathery, green leaves turn to a superb burgundy-red fall foliage color. This tree form is best planted as a focal point in shrub borders, or as a fragrant specimen near windows in the front landscape. Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Lilacs make excellent sunny border plants for cutting, fragrance, pollinator attraction and hedging. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water once a week the first year. Prune after flowering is finished in spring. Fertilize in early spring and mid-summer with a slow release fertilizer. Follow label instructions. Mulch 2? to suppress weeds, retain moisture and protect against extremes of soil temperature. Plant with Coneflowers, Boxwood and Grasses.
