This evergreen family produces an assortment of small to medium size shrubs. The needles of this family are sharp, forming a ?bottle brush-like? tip, and may vary in shades of green and blue. Slow growing, and also extremely cold hardy, and can be used as a very effective natural screen, specimen, small Christmas tree, or for small species a foundation, container, or bank cover plant. Adds pleasing color contrast and interest anytime of the year. Rainbow's End® is a special variety that makes a brilliant addition to the summer garden because in midsummer, a second flush of growth transforms the light green, conical shrub into a beacon of bright lemon yellow. A dramatic summer surprise! Plant in well-drained, amended soil. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week, for the first year. Little pruning needed; shapes itself nicely. Remove dead or damaged branches at any time. Prune or shear after new "candle" growth that has developed in late spring to early summer. Fertilize in early spring, mid-summer, and fall with an acidic fertilizer per label instructions. Mulch 2" to suppress weeds, retain moisture, and protect against extremes of soil temperature.
