Hostas are a large, diverse perennial family of clump-forming plants with bold foliage in various shades of color, patterns, and sizes. They also produce scapes of trumpet flowers in white and varying shades of purple that may exude a strong perfume to little or no fragrance. Hostas are one of the easiest-to-grow shade plants for the landscape and container gardens. 'Autumn Frost', a Shadowland® hybrid variety from Proven Winners®, is striking with its medium-sized mound of showy, frosty blue leaves with extra wide, bright yellow margins. The margins lighten to creamy white. Light lavender flowers present in late spring or early summer. This variety has good slug resistance. Combines well with Astilbe, bleeding hearts, and ferns. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter. Water well after planting; maintain 1 inch of water, once a week the first year. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring and again midsummer following the package instructions. Deadhead spent flowers and scapes for a tidy appearance. Mulch to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when needed.
