Hosta 'Empress Wu' 1 Gallon

Hosta 'Empress Wu' 1 Gallon

Hosta spp.

Hostas, also known as Plantain Lily, are a large, diverse perennial family of clump-forming plants with bold foliage in various shades of color, patterns, and sizes. They also produce flowerscapes of trumpet shaped blooms that attract pollinators, and may exude a strong perfume depending on plant variety. Hostas are one of the easiest-to-grow shade plants for the landscape and container garden. 'Empress Wu' is one of the largest varieties available, offering a tropical-looking, upright mound of huge, thick, paddle-shaped, dark green leaves with deep veins measuring 1.5 feet wide and long. Pale, reddish violet flowers appear in early to midsummer on 48 inch scapes to attract hummingbirds. This variety makes an outstanding focal point or statement in the shade garden. Grow with Astilbe, ferns, and Heuchera. Plant in well-drained to moist, nutrient rich soil amended with organic matter like Petitti Planting Mix. Water well after planting; maintain 1" of water, once a week the first year. Use Plant-tone and Iron-tone in spring or at planting; apply Osmocote in summer. Deadhead spent flower stems for neat appearance. Mulch 1-2" to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Divide in spring or fall when necessary.
